Bentonville, Arkansas Portrait Session | Melanie

If you haven't noticed by now, my sister-in-law is one of my favorite people to take photos of. We do spur of the moment shoots whenever we get the chance to...this last one was a couple weeks ago when I was in Bentonville for a family session (check out the family session here).

Melanie is coming close to the end of beauty school training and will be looking for a job at a salon in November!! I keep trying to convince her to move up to Kansas City so I can hang out with her all the time...we'll see, but I'll keep trying ;) I'd been wanting to use this brick building that we pass every time we go to their house for awhile now so I'm pumped to have finally gotten the chance to. It worked out as perfectly as I had imagined!!

Fayettville, Arkansas | Sloan's First Birthday Photos

I know I always say this...but I can't believe it's already been a year since I did this sweet little one's newborn photos in her little ladybug outfit (did you miss those? Check them out HERE)! Watching kids grow up and getting to help capture these precious moments in their lives is one of the parts of my job that is closest to my heart :D The Duncan family is consistently sweet, down-to-earth, and one of my favorite family's to work with! Meghan was even the one I trusted to do my hair and makeup for my wedding (she cut 19 inches off my hair and was the first person to give me bangs in high school...so there is a lot of trust there). Enjoy!

Woodland Park, Colorado Senior Photos | Shanae Roberts

I can't BELIEVE my little sister is a senior in high school already!! She is my mini-me and it was my favorite to get to take her photos a couple weeks ago in our beautiful hometown, Woodland Park, Colorado. We went to my favorite old barn and brought our mom along with us which mostly was perfect because she made Shanae laugh a lot :)

Shanae has a beautiful, positive spirit and is so dedicated to whatever she puts her mind to. She is an incredible artist (check out some of her work here), a talented musician, and most likely a soon to be published author (check out her Facebook page). She is also an animal lover at her very core (the last photo is of her puppy, not her, in case you couldn't tell). She has always been mature for her age and it is such a privilege to be her sister. Love you nina!!

Negley Family

Somehow it seems hard to find a bad looking spot to take photos in Colorado and this time I had the privilege of shooting these right in the Negley's back yard! They have a gorgeous place in Colorado Springs, an area that I'd never been to.  I got to do family photos and Logan's senior photos at the same time! Enjoy :)

Wiley Family

After about a year of trying to find a time that would work for both of us (since we live in different states), I finally got to do the Wiley family photos! A cool, beautiful Saturday morning in Woodland Park, Colorado, we ventured up to Red Rocks Campground which the kids absolutely loved. There is nothing better when you are a child than climbing on rocks and running through the forest :D I hope someday that I live in a place that I can raise my kids outdoors like I was!

Mindy and Kip, thanks for waiting for me, I had so much fun and your family is incredibly sweet!

Friesema Family

I'm slightly backlogged with editing from so many shoots this week, but I really wanted to share two of my favorite sneak peeks from the Friesema family's session yesterday. If these don't make you automatically smile, you might not have a heart ;)

I promise there are more coming of this wonderful family soon!

Roshek Family

Photography is an amazing way to get reconnected with old friends. This week I had the privilege of photographing my high school volleyball coach's family of six and it was a blast to not only do what I love, but to also chat and get caught up on each other's lives. They're children are the exact order as my siblings and I are (2 girls, 1 boy, 1 girl) so it was fun to get a little nostalgic thinking back to my childhood here in Colorado as well.

We shot at Red Rocks Campground in Woodland Park, CO...it's quite amazing how many beautiful spots are so close to my parents' house!

Troy and Brittany Link

Troy and Brittany were an absolute joy to photograph in downtown Kansas City last week. Sometimes I feel like I overuse locations and, while others might not notice, I get a bit bored with them. Liberty Memorial was a new location for me and I absolutely loved it! I think I could get several more shoots here without getting bored because you have the city view in the background, the stairs/simple stone, as well as greenery that you can incorporate in or use by itself. The sun also sets right behind the trees on the East side (obviously) and makes the PERFECT spot for my favorite, backlit sunlight bokeh that I hope is becoming one of my signature looks! This couples shoot was super fun and they were so sweet. I love when my clients are actually interested in my life beyond my photos because it makes it easier to be interested in their lives, which I love! Photography is about more than just making money...it's about creating relationships and being a part of something bigger than ourselves. Enjoy :)

Hatcher's First Birthday

Sweet Hatcher was the first 'true' newborn I ever photographed (within the first 2 weeks of birth). He is a part of one of my wonderful Northwest Arkansas families! To have the opportunity to take his first birthday photos was so special!! It's such a privilege to get to watch kids grow up this way, and to help capture these precious moments in their lives for the parents and for them to see and laugh at down the road. He's graduated from a crochet football sack to a little hat...I can't wait to see what's next :D

Stites Wedding | Kansas City

“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Here is a glimpse of 9 beautiful and fun hours from Felicia and Kendel's Kansas City wedding a couple weeks ago! I couldn't have been more excited to finally book one here now that I've lived here for almost a whole year (time flies!). I love traveling for weddings, but it was so refreshing to be in our new hometown and get to do what I love. The ceremony was at Overland Park Church of God Holiness and the reception was at the Tomahawk Hills Golf Course in Shawnee. Felicia was (obviously) STUNNING and they were both giddy and adorable and in love :D

Don't forget to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest...and, if you feel so inclined, I'd love if you left a review of your experience with Kira Whitney Photography on my Google+ page!

Felicia and Kendel Engagement | KC Kaufman Gardens

A gorgeous Kansas City engagement on a beautiful, perfect evening :) Felicia and Kendel will be getting married next month and I have the privilege of getting to capture their special day! Since this is the first wedding I get to do in my new city, I'm excited to say the least...and how lucky that it is for such a sweet couple!!

Congratulations you two, thanks for trusting me and letting me be a part of your new adventure.

Golden, Colorado Wedding | Ethan & Rebecca

It's not often that I'm friends with the groom before I am the bride...but Ethan and I were friends in high school! I always knew that he deserved someone extremely special and as soon as I met Rebecca I could tell she would go above and beyond that high bar! If I could choose one word to describe this couple, both individually and together, it would be kind. In all the years I've known Ethan I can't think of a SINGLE moment when he's said something bad about someone else. He gives people the benefit of the doubt, gives grace when we don't deserve it, and is always ready to encourage those around him.

You can tell a lot about a girl from the way she acts on her wedding day.  Rebecca spent the whole day with a smile on her face and was so graceful and gentle-spirited. I couldn't ask for a better bride to work with!! I hope I did this gorgeous mountain wedding justice and that these photos can help everyone involved remember it and help those who weren't able to make it get a glimpse into this beautiful, special day in Ethan and Rebecca's lives.

I feel so honored that you two wanted Preston and I to capture your big day and I can't wait to see all the places you will go and things you will do throughout your new life together :) Love y'all!

Peyton's First Birthday!

I can't believe this little cutie turns 1 today!!!! It's so special to have photographed her momma when she was pregnant with Peyton and then to get to do her first birthday photos :) This was also my first "cake-smash" session and it was a BLAST! Even though she didn't really like how sweet the cake was, she sure liked playing with it and you'd never be able to tell! HAPPY BIRTHDAY PEYTON and congrats to your sweet parents!

Keaton Sheid | OKC Senior

I'm so happy we found time to do Keaton's senior photos while I was in OKC last week! He is such a fun-loving soul and the weather was much better than the rainy forecast :) Congratulations Keaton, you've almost made it through high school!!!!

Alexis | Kansas City Senior

Man did I have it easy on this shoot! Alexis is so gorgeous, the weather was beautiful, and practically her whole family came along for the ride which made it so much fun. Her aunt took care of makeup helped me keep an eye out for run away hairs, plus she was in charge of saying funny things to make Alexis smile and nicely asking people to move so we could use certain spots of a very busy park. I told her she should come with me on every shoot ;)

March Favorites

It's hard to blog every session, but I certainly didn't want to miss sharing some of my favorite photos from March with you all. Two sweet family sessions and a Grad School senior!! These were shot in Bentonville, AR outside the Crystal Bridges museum of art. Northwest Arkansas is truly a hidden treasure if you've never been - GORGEOUS.

March 2015 Engagements

If I'm honest with myself, blogging is not my strong point.  I love taking photos, culling, editing, and sharing with my clients and viewers, but when I go to write about the experience, the people, and the thing that I'm so passionate about, I never feel like I have enough to say.  It's not a dislike of writing, I've always loved writing.... I think it's the time and consistency thing. Consistently blogging takes an INCREDIBLE about of time and dedication. One of my dreams is to have a lifestyle blog in addition to my photography website so I can share more of the other things I'm passionate about: my family, my faith, food, city life, outdoor activities....etc.

Someday I'll get there (so stick around!), but for now, I'd like to share with you a couple engagement sessions I did a few weeks ago.  I get to photograph the second couple's wedding this summer very close to my hometown in Colorado and I couldn't be more excited than to do what I love, where I love, with such goofy, wonderful people!!

Hayes' 1st Birthday

What a little sweetheart Hayes is! You may remember his brother from an adorable football outfit I posted a while back...too much cuteness in one family!! Their momma always makes it so easy on me too with adorable little outfits and ideas :) Photographer heaven!

Happy Birthday Hayes and thanks to this sweet family for letting me capture these moments!
